Consistency is not a starting point
Hate me or love me, but if you are wanting to start something consistently. The consistency is not your focus at the start, your return is.
Let me explain, when we want to commit to 3 days in the gym a week and do this consistently, that sounds like a great idea. You are prioritising your health etc. But truth be told, to build a habit, consistency may not be the most important focus point.
Your focus point needs to be on returning and remembering this commitment.
Too often we start out strong, a week happens and YES, 3 days in workout classes are done. I AM A WINNER
Then the dreaded sick day happens and now your focus is on healing. Understandably so, your health is crucial.
Your consistency may fall out of the window and 4 days later you forget the consistency commitment alltogether. To be fair, this makes sense given a new habit does take repitition and not just 60/90 days.
What is far more important is remembering and helping your memory to nudge you on this commitment you had set out to complete to yourself. And to find a way to return with less friction is the key here.
For example: A new workout gear may not be the way, but the walk to the gym could be the easiest thing to commit to. Small, achievable and instant. The water bottle you use and a sign up to a class, to start again.
This process of returning will be a part of your life before it gets easier.
It’s a practise and you are not a failure for not meeting consistency, flip the story and aim for returns and you will notice a huge difference. Read more about - recognising ourselves is HARD - in the blog section.
